According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake, measuring 7.1 in magnitude, occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The tremors were felt not only in Tibet but also in neighboring countries. In the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu, strong shocks were reported, affecting the area near Mount Everest as well. The earthquake was also recorded in northern regions of India and Bhutan.
Rescue operations are currently underway, and the extent of the destruction and the number of injured is being assessed. Geologists warn of potential aftershocks that could complicate the situation.
